Seymour’s Parks & Recreation offers a smorgasbord of activities for children and adults. All of our parks offer FREE ADMISSION unless noted as reserved. Contact the Seymour Parks and Recreation Department for questions on classes, happenings or to reserve a shelter house or the Community Center.

Public Parks & Recreation Facilities
Burkhart Plaza
Burkhart Plaza was dedicated in July 2020, and named in honor of longtime Seymour Mayor John Burkhart, who passed away in 2019. Formerly known as One Chamber Square, this area underwent a huge overhaul. The interactive, music-themed plaza connects the downtown area with Crossroads Community Park and is a great place for lunch or to spend some time people-watching in Seymour's historic downtown.

Crossroads Community Park
Crossroads Community Park is located at 101 E. Tipton Street and was constructed in 2018. The park features the JCB Pavilion, fitness court, a walking/biking trail, restroom facilities and more than 50 parking spaces. The Park can be rented through the Parks and Recreation Department. The Pavilion is the perfect place to enjoy live music and fun, just steps away from Seymour’s Historic Downtown.

Freeman Field Recreational Facility
Freeman Field Recreational Facility is a 67 acre site that has softball/baseball diamonds and soccer fields. Freeman Field Rec. Facility also features shelter houses, a playground concrete cornhole and ping pong table and a 2-mile walk/bike/jogging trail which connects the Park to the Freeman Field Industrial Park. The Grassy Fork Trail offers a 5K course with a covered bridge. Facilities onsite include a concession area, a restroom facility that meets ADA requirements and a maintenance area.

Gaiser Park
Gaiser Park has 9.9 acres, softball field and volleyball/basketball courts. Onsite you will find a shelter house with electrical service and a maintenance area. Children love the spacious playground which includes a sway fun wheelchair accessible feature for handicapped guests. Families enjoy the horseshoe pits and picnic areas and will soon be able to enjoy two pickleball courts. Facilities include a concession area and ADA accessible bathrooms.

Kasting Park
Kasting Park has 16.9 acres and offers four lighted youth league baseball/softball diamonds and two batting cages for league use. There is a sheltered playground structure, bathrooms, maintenance and storage and concession area.

Kessler Park
Kessler Park has 6.3 acres and has two lighted youth league baseball/softball diamonds. Onsite you will find a shelter house, a picnic area and a playground. Facilities include a new concession area, maintenance area and ADA accessible bathrooms.

Mellencamp Plaza
The Mellencamp Plaza is currently under construction and will serve as Seymour's newest pocket park. The Plaza was made possible due to a generous donation from the John Mellencamp family The Plaza is located directly next to the Mellencamp Mural, which was completed in 2019. The Plaza will offer seating on a beautiful, grassy area in the heart of historic downtown and will serve as a great meeting place during Seymour Oktoberfest.

Seymour Community Center
Seymour Community Center is open for older Americans as a meal site Monday through Friday. Social interaction, games, cards, guest speakers, exercise and trips are available for seniors and planned by the Activities Director. The Center is open for drop-in visitation 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and is also available for rental.
The Center is available for rental to local residents on a non-profit basis, by contacting the Park & Recreation Department, at 301-309 North Chestnut Street, 812-522-6420.
Parks and Recreation Bus provides daily Monday through Friday transportation to the Seymour Community Center Meal Site. Day trips are also scheduled as well as multiple day tour trips.
Shield’s Park & Schurman-Grubb Memorial Skatepark
Shields Park consists of 12.5 acres and is the oldest park in Seymour. It was designated by Meedy Shields in 1852 and offers two baseball/softball diamonds, and basketball courts. Families enjoy the shelter house with electrical service, picnic areas and playground with equipment intended to be user friendly to both physically and/or mentally challenged guests. Facilities include two concession areas, a bandstand, ADA accessible bathrooms and a maintenance area with interactive murals. The Schurman-Grubb Memorial Skatepark is a concrete park with a ¾ bowl, hips, ledges, rails, quarter pipes and more.

Shields Park Pool
Shields Park Pool is a 50-meter pool with a water slide, and diving well, and is located at Shields Park, and is open for public swimming from Memorial Day weekend until school starts in August. A variety of programs are offered during the season that includes swim lessons, infant/parent lessons, private lessons, dive-in movies, lap swim, water exercise, radio days, pool rentals, competitive team that hosts an annual meet the second weekend in July.

Steinker Platz
Steinker Platz, a pocket park tucked into historic downtown Seymour, is located at 212 S. Chestnut St. The park features open green space designed for relaxation and recreation, surrounded by a beautifully landscaped border, which boasts a handcrafted Trellis at the park entrance. This tucked away gem adds a touch of beauty in between the rich historic buildings of downtown Seymour. Steinker Platz opened in April of 2014.

Parks & Recreation Bus - Community Center
The Seymour City Park & Recreation Bus provides the daily transportation (Monday through Friday) to the Seymour Community Center Meal Site.
Parks & Recreation Bus - Day Trips
Day trips are also scheduled at the site, as well as multiple day tour trips in cooperation with Tour Companies.
Some of the popular events attended are the Jackson County Fair, Indiana and Kentucky State Fairs, local festivals and points of interest throughout the state.
